The virtue of statistical techniques or ``envelope'' codes to calculate particle beams through transport channels and accelerators is their speed. They are orders of magnitude faster than multi-particle simulations. This enables them to be useful both in designing complex systems and in operating beamlines, synchrotrons and linear accelerators.
